Louise Titchener is the author of over forty traditionally published novels in a variety of genres including romance, science-fiction-fantasy, and mystery. She has two published mystery series. The first is set in Baltimore and features Toni Credella, a dyslexic young woman determined to defend her sex against evildoers. The Oliver Redcastle historical series is set in the 1880's and features a sharpshooter and ex-Pinkerton protagonist. The first two Redcastle mysteries take place in Baltimore where Louise spent many years. Trouble in Tampa is set in the area where Louise now lives with her philosophy professor husband. In addition to writing and reading, she likes to kayak, admire the beautiful tropical birds in her neighborhood, and take long walks.

5.0 out of 5 stars       Fine historical thriller with a unique setting.

I really like historical fiction in which the author shows me a broad and detailed view of an unfamiliar setting. This takes a lot of research and imagination, and Titchener does it here in spades.

Florida in 1885 WAS much like the wild west. Our hero, Oliver Redcastle, is a detective from Baltimore on assignment to find a missing investor in Tampa. We follow Redcastle’s adventures from the glittering high society
of Tampa, to the horrors of imprisonment in a backwoods turpentine camp, through hair-raising escapes in the wilderness and at sea, and finally to a series of violent encounters in the Everglades.

The author is also sensitive to historical social issues, and we’re exposed to believable characters from diverse races, classes, and economic backgrounds. These include Cuban gun runners, con men, Florida crackers, and a kick-ass Lady detective (who, like Redcastle himself, is beautifully drawn, evincing not only courage
and determination, but depth and vulnerability).

I loved everything about this novel. If you like historical fiction, I think you will too.

The Gulf Coast of Florida was once the wildest of wild west
. Titchener brings those days back to life with a rip-roaring tale that features a sympathetic hero, who is determined to survive so his ailing daughter has her own chance at life, clever duplicitous women and vivid descriptions of a long-gone time and place you’ll be glad you have a chance to visit.
